Cutty Ranks

Born Philip Thomas, Jamaica in 1965, Cutty Ranks is one of the most formidable and popular dancehall DJ?s of all time

In the ?rockstone? tradition of DJ?s, his stage name stems from his first job as a butcher and by the age of 14 he was already a major fixture on the mic for local sound system Feathertone. Stints then followed on other sounds such as Stereo Mars, Arrows and Metro Media. He began his recording career at Winston Riley?s Techniques label with "Gunman Lyrics". He then moved to Miami with Skeng Don and then on to Patrick Roberts? Shocking Vibes camp where he had his first major hit, ?The Bomber?. By now he was the only DJ in Jamaica who could seriously challenge the dominance of Shabba Ranks and in 1990 he joined Donovan Germain's Penthouse label where hits such as ?Pon Me Nozzle? and ?Dominate? soon followed

Next he recorded for the London based Fashion label and had a huge worldwide smash with ?The Stopper?, it?s success further helped by the fact that the 12? also featured a Hip Hop mix. The album of the same name was also very successful. By 1992 some began asking if Cutty?s best days were behind him but he silenced the cynics with the awesome ?Who Say Me Dun? and he continued to have hits throughout the rest of the 90s, no doubt helped by the fact he always embraced other styles of dance music such as Jungle and Hip Hop, whilst never letting go of his Jamaican dancehall roots

In 2000 he released the album Back With A Vengeance, produced by King Jammy and he still continues to record and perform today
