Born Lloyd James in Kingston Jamaica, King Jammy started out working for the legendary King Tubby, a fellow resident of the Waterhouse area of Kingston. Jammy was always in touch with the grass-roots of reggae which gave him an advantage over his rivals and in1985 he changed the music for ever with the absolutely huge Under Me Sleng Teng, voiced by a young singer called Wayne Smith. With it?s digital rhythm taken from a cheap Casio keyboard the song made people realise you didn?t need a full (and expensive !) band to make a hit record. Digital Reggae now ruled and Jammy was the King. For the 20 years since he has had hit after hit and virtually every artist, old and new has recorded for him. His contribution to modern reggae and dancehall has been massive.
