Wallace Wilson, aka Red Rat was born into a musical family in the tourist area of St.Anns Bay, Jamaica in 1978. His father played guitar for both the Vagabonds in England and Byron Lee and the Dragonaires whilst his brothers played bass, keyboards and drums in a variety of different bands. Red Rat?s first performance was at the age of four during his brothers? cabaret show but he says that his first really notable performance was at a school barbeque at the age of 12. He was initially going under the name of Mice but there were already 2 other DJ?s using the same name so he became Red Rat after fellow DJ General Degree commented that ?yah red and you look like a rat !?
With his distinctive voice and unique sense of humour he soon came to the attention of Danny Brownie?s Main Street Crew, who had a roster of highly respected artists such as Buccaneer, Hawkeye and General Degree. His recording debut came on the single "Can't Live Without You" with his brother's band KRU. His first solo single, "Itsy Bitsy" was recorded for Main Street whilst he was still at school but he decided to wait until graduation before pursuing music full time. After graduating in 1996 he released a string of hit singles such as ?Dwayne?, ?Good Boy? and ?Shelly-Ann?, the latter catapulting him to the top of Reggae charts worldwide
In 1997 he released his debut album, "Oh No....It's Red Rat!" on the Greensleeves label - it yielded more hits such as "Tight Up Skirt", "Cruise" and "Big Man Little Yute" (with fellow Main Street artist Goofy) The album's success and constant radio play, coupled with his legendary outrageous live performances took him all over the world.
A second album, "I'm a Big Kid Now" followed in 1999 with yet more hits, critical acclaim and special guest appearances from a diverse set of artists and producers such as Treach of Naughty by Nature. Red Rat then took a hiatus from recording to spend time with his daughter whilst working behind the scenes producing tracks for artists such as Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Spragga Benz, T.O.K.and many others for his own Brat Productions
Inspired to return to the studio in 2002 he and manager Delroy Escoffery formed Rat-A-Kastle Records and Red Rat continues to successfully record, produce and perform today
