Master drummer and composer, Steve is a true pioneer of boundary breaking music. Over the last 40 years he has played and recorded with an astonishing array or artists such as Sun Ra, James Brown, Miles Davis, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Fela Kuti, Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp and Lester Bowie
Born in the Bronx, New York, the family then moved out to Queens where Steve, whilst still at school, would spend all his spare time hanging out with John Coltrane who lived 3 blocks away on Mexico Street. In the 60s he played drums on many Motown sessions (including ?Dancing In The Streets? and ?Heatwave?) whilst doing club work with legends such as Fats Domino and Peggy Lee
In 1966 Steve went to Africa for 2 years to play with Fela Kuti. Upon his return he joined Sun Ra?s Arkestra but was unaware that while he?d been away he?d been called up by the Army to fight in Vietnam. Admitting he wouldn?t have gone even if he had known about his call ? up he was sentenced to 4 years in prison. He served two and after his release set up his own Mustevic label, releasing 4 albums of his own music, 2 of which have been released by Soul Jazz Records. With more energy and enthusiasm than most people a quarter of his age, he still plays live all over the world and in 2005 recorded the ?Spirit Walk? album for Soul Jazz with Kieran Hebden from Fourtet.
