The original members of War first started playing together around 1960 in Los Angeles ? originally as The Creators, then as The Romeos, Senor Soul and The Nightshift before they became known as War. Although they had Eric Burdon (from the Animals !) on vocals for a while most of the group are African ? Americans but the music they play is a mix of funk, Latin, soul, disco and rock. They released a number of very successful albums in the 70s on the United Artists label. 2 of their best tracks, the Barrio Funk block party classic ?Me And Baby Brother? and the extended Latin funk / disco stormer ?War Is Coming? are available on Soul Jazz Records? ?Barrio Nuevo? compilation .
