Wayne Smith

Born 1965, Waterhouse, Kingston, Jamaica, Smith began singing at school and in church. After leaving school he began an apprenticeship as an electrician but spent his nights following Prince (later to become King) Jammy?s sound system. Eventually Jammy noticed this talented youth and singles such as ?Ain?t No Me Without You?, ?Change My Mind? and ?Life Is A Moment? followed

He then went to work with other producers and labels such as King Tubby and Channel One and whilst these collaborations produced more hits none of them could compare with the absolutely massive ?Under Me Sleng Teng? that he recorded whilst working back with Jammy in 1985. The Sleng Teng rhythm, famously utilised from a tiny Casio synthesizer has become the most versioned rhythm of all time and it completely changed the face of Jamaican music, ushering in the digital age of computerised rhythms which is still the norm today

Although hard to follow up after such a massive record, Smith did go on to have more hits before moving to America where he set up his own label
